Happy Sunday ladies! To jump start your week, I wanted to share 4 ways to style a simple white sweater. You may think neutral tops are the easiest thing to style, and while I wouldn’t disagree, it pains me to see how many women only wear their white, black, grey or beige sweater with…well…jeans.
Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for a classic jeans and neutral sweater combo the mornings I wake up and am feeling a little more motivated to stay in bed in sweatpants than get dressed and go to work.
But our staple pieces deserve a much more adventurous life than the jeans and loafer. They deserve parties! They deserve date nights! They deserve road trips!
So next time you reach for your go-to white sweater, keep these style tips at the ready:
- For a Road Trip
Mark and I drove about three hours from North Conway, New Hampshire to his home today, and this was the outfit I wore. Snapped this pick right after hopping out of the car!
A white sweater can be paired with any lounge pant, and I love this sea foam green color for spring. I broke out one of my spring scarfs since it is still below thirty degrees up north, and finished this outfit off with my tried and true leopard kicks.
2. Out to the City
The best thing about fashion is that you can play dress up long after childhood. For example, I am not a hipster. I’ve never even owned a pair of aviators until this weekend. But if I’m going out into Cambridge to visit friends, this is totally an outfit I would wear.
The neutral sweater allows the cargo joggers to be the center of attention. This pant is so comfortable and wearable for a day walking around the city. As are my favorite Leopard shoes!
3. Out for Date Night
Next time you choose your neutral sweater, pair with a patterned bottom. This could be a classic pin-stripe or plaid trouser, an aztec or ikat skirt, leopard or snakeskin pant, and so, so much more.
For the past few months, I have been making my outfit all about the bottom (pants, skirts, statement shoes, etc.). This is for multiple reasons: I’m more confident in my ass-ets than my endowments, I’ve been needing more neutral/basic tops which lends itself to more fashion in the bottoms, and a stylish pant usually warrants a greater “oooh”” factor than a stylish blouse.
4. To Work
No, I will not shame anyone for sticking with jeans. But I will challenge you this…do you have any pairs of jeans that have that extra oomf? Do they have a detail that makes them slightly more elevated than your typical pair? I’m talking a raw hem, a paperbag waist, an eyelet detail, etc.
And if you don’t, do you have a shoe that has a little more interest than a basic neutral loafer? Do you have a colored shoe? A leopard shoe? A strappy shoe? Studded? Multi-Media? Vintage? I went for my sparkly Kate Spade mules with a necklace to match.
You don’t need much to dress up a white sweater, just that one eye-catching piece.
